Bungla Coffee House

Avocado toast at Bungla Coffee House, Bella Vista, Panama City

The verdict

A Thursday breakfast on the terrace: the Bungla Panameño, the house take on a typical Panamanian morning plate, and a cappuccino rimmed in crushed pistachio.

We sat down on the terrace on a Thursday at twenty to eleven, behind a glass wall lined with big tropical leaves and under a striped awning.

The coffee came first: the Pistacho Coffee, a cappuccino made with pistachio syrup, its rim coated in pistachio cream and crushed pistachio, with a bear's face drawn in the foam.

Three minutes later the Bungla Panameño arrived, which is the kitchen's version of a typical Panamanian breakfast: a bowl of ropa vieja, slices of grilled white cheese, avocado under black sesame, and golden slices of fresh corn.

Skip if

  • You take your coffee plain and want the house specials. Several of them are built on syrups, pistachio cream or Nutella, although espresso, filter coffee and Geisha are on the menu too.
  • You want a full restaurant meal. It is a café first: breakfasts, toasts, bowls and sandwiches, with only a short list of chef's specials.

Would we go back? Yes, we would go back.
